Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 28, 2026

OBSCURA ("OBSCURA," "we," "us") makes the OBSCURA mobile app, the CLARITY heads-up display, and the website obscura-technologies.com. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. OBSCURA is currently operated by Samuel Ward in Arkansas, United States.

The short version: the app keeps your drive data on your phone. We don't sell your data, we don't run ads, and the app has no accounts or analytics.

1. Information the app uses

Location. The app uses your device's GPS location (including speed and heading) to show your position on the map, give turn-by-turn directions, and record drives you choose to start. The app asks for location permission before using it, and you can turn it off at any time in your phone's settings. Without location access, navigation and drive recording won't work.

Destinations. When you start navigation, the destination you enter and your current coordinates are sent to Google's Directions service to calculate a route (see Section 3).

Drive history. When you record a drive, the app saves the route points, speed, distance, duration, and timestamps. This is stored only on your device. We do not upload it to our servers. You can delete any drive from within the app, and deleting the app removes all of it.

Settings. Your preferences (units, route color, projection mode) are stored only on your device.

CLARITY device connection. When you pair the app with a CLARITY unit, navigation information is sent directly from your phone to the device over Bluetooth. This connection is local between your phone and your CLARITY. It does not pass through our servers.

Photos. If a feature in the app asks to access your photos, it only does so with your permission, and selected images stay on your device.

We do not collect your name, email, contacts, or any account information through the app, and the app does not contain advertising or third-party analytics.

2. Information the website collects

Our website runs on Squarespace. When you visit, place an order, join the Founders Waitlist, or contact us, we may collect:

  • Information you provide, such as your name, email address, shipping address, and messages you send us.

  • Order details. Payments are processed by our payment providers (such as Stripe, PayPal, or Squarespace Payments). We never see or store your full card number.

  • Basic usage data collected automatically by Squarespace, such as browser type, pages visited, and approximate location based on IP address, using cookies and similar technologies.

You can control cookies through your browser settings and the site's cookie banner, where shown.

3. Third-party services

We rely on a small number of service providers to run OBSCURA. They receive only what's needed to provide their service:

  • Google Maps Platform (maps and directions in the app). Google receives your location and destination when you navigate. Google's use of this data is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.

  • Squarespace (website hosting, store, forms), under the Squarespace Privacy Policy.

  • Payment processors for website orders, under their own privacy policies.

  • Apple (App Store distribution), under Apple's privacy policy.

4. How we use information

  • Provide navigation, drive recording, and CLARITY display features.

  • Process and ship orders, and manage the Founders Waitlist.

  • Respond to messages and provide support.

  • Send product updates if you opted in. You can unsubscribe from any email at any time.

  • Keep our website and products secure and working properly.

5. What we don't do

  • We don't sell or rent your personal information.

  • We don't share your information for targeted advertising.

  • We don't track your location in the background unless you are actively navigating or recording a drive.

6. Data retention

App data (drives and settings) stays on your device until you delete it or delete the app. Website information (orders, waitlist sign-ups, messages) is kept as long as needed to fulfill orders, meet legal and tax obligations, and run the waitlist, then deleted.

7. Your choices and rights

  • Location: turn location access on or off in your phone's settings.

  • Drive data: delete individual drives in the app, or delete the app to remove everything.

  • Emails: unsubscribe using the link in any email.

  • Access or deletion: you can ask us what website information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing us. We will respond within 30 days.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law. We'll honor valid requests regardless of where you live.

8. Security

We use reasonable measures to protect your information, and we keep as little data as possible in the first place. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.

9. Children

OBSCURA products are designed for drivers. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

10. Safe driving

Always follow traffic laws and keep your attention on the road. Do not interact with the app while driving.

11. Changes to this policy

As OBSCURA grows (for example, if we add accounts or online features to the app), we'll update this policy and change the effective date above. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app or on the website before it takes effect.
